The Next Glance: The Gathering

Yangon, Burma

It is raining as the last arrivals have settled into the hotel in downtown Yangon. Hutson has informed David Raybourne that the UNHCR and the Red Cross have people already at a camp near the Thai border. Some of them will be taking a plane to it. If he is truly interested in investigating--it shouldn't do much harm to go there.

Apparently the Red Cross team leader is Dr. Kimiko St. James, an American. It also includes:
Dr. Mikhail Demidenko, Russian-born American citizen, psychologist
Dr. Ronald Cox, New Zealand citizen, interning in communicable diseases
Sa Thein, Burmese born Australian citizen, paramedic/nurse
Charlie Rusk, Canadian engineer and camp planning officer
Lucia DelVecchio, Administrative Assistant Team Leader

Kimiko for her part has found Lucia a very nice companion. She seems to enjoy taking in the view of an attractive man as much as Kimiko does, but with a more detached interest. She apparently comes from a wealthy artistic family in Venice.

Kimiko also notices that Ronald Cox is somewhat discomforted by her when they are not talking pure shop; he seems to blush easily in her presence.

Mikhail for his part finds Sa a pleasant companion, who enjoys discussing psychological and philosophical subjects.

The Red Cross/UNHCR camp is going to have a liason, a Major Kung, who will be accompanying them on the plane. He seems urbane and speaks excellent english, almost without an accent. It is hard to imagine that he is a member of a repressive military regime apart from his uniform, which seems hand tailored.

David sits at the foot of the hotel bed staring at the wall ahead. Something in the whorls of damp and mould had reminded him, in the haze of half-sleep, of his crimson painting back home. His case lay next to him on the bed, still neatly packed.

Somehow he had managed to sleep through his appointed meeting with the Burmese. A first in months, three solid hours of undisturbed rest. So jetlag was the remedy.

At some point Yangon had come to seem as false and illusory as London. There would only be more lies here, whether confronting Hutson or the Burmese generals, and the more strident he became the more forceful the lying would become. He wished to go deeper, to where reality had an immediacy that could not be distorted.

Picking up his case he leaves the bed, the room, the confusion and fear behind him, bound for the refugees camp in earnest.

Kimiko checks in and deposits her lugage in her room before quickly going out to walk around the hotel a bit. She doesn't venture outside unless some special reason comes up and not without some male companion with her. Maybe find a bar and an ice tea? A short time to relax (and get used to the heat) before having to delve into the work at the 'fugeecamp which will probably be never ending...

Mikhail

Mikhail is put through to his daughter, who says softly, "Daddy? I've been thinking about you. I miss you. When are you coming home?"
Mikhail finds that his daughter is upset and can't really convey what is bothering her. His professional abilities, his love for her make him feel incompetent and helpless; she weeps softly over the phone--he can imagine her cradling the phone to her cheek in an effort to be close to him. She seems to calm a little but he isn't sure why--is it just the sound of his voice? Is it just the sense that she has no choice? When he talks briefly to the people on the other side they have no information for him--they urge him to get on with his work--they assure him that they're doing all that they can.

David

The travel guide on David's bedstand talks of local crafts, cinema, musical shows, temples and markets, but it is as though the city's exotic and cruel aspects hide another London. The air conditioned room with its slow high raised ceiling fan seems like a temporary haven at best but better than nothing. And he did take in a brief show the other night--the junta officers and UN officials smiling and clapping at a girl band singing "Stand by your Man" in southeast asian accents, wearing cowboy hats and boots.

Kimiko

Kimiko is able to find a couple of bars in the hotel--the best one has an odd Chinese/British colonial blend to it--paper screens with watercolours, high ceiling fans, huge oak bar, faded menu cards. The iced tea comes in a glass heavy enough to kill someone with.

A friendly young waiter lavishes attendance on her--oddly he has a french accent tinted with malay.

In addition an older man, with weathered face in a tropical suit, his features suggesting that he too might be eurasian, blatantly checks her out, his slightly epithentically shadowed eyes following her walk, smoothly moving along her legs and upper body, then raising his glass of whiskey to her with a faint smile.

(OOC: all please feel free to reply to your scenes as you wish, but following that please post your reactions here)

Yangon Airport

Major Kung, Lucia DelVecchio, Ronald Cox, Sa Thein, a UNHCR official, the rather oddly pallid and sweaty Paul Vandervelden, and a small group of Red Cross workers who seem like they must be in their teens to the group of you are waiting in a crowded seating area, fanning themselves, drinking from bottles of water, waiting for the plane to arrive and be refuelled. This seems to take forever, and there are maddening queues for papers being checked, then rechecked by different government officials. In spite of all the uniforms there seems to be some confusion going on.

Finally however a Fokker 28 pulls up and gets refuelled on the runway, luggage is packed into it.

Mikhail, Kimiko and David find each other sitting not far away and have a chance to get to know each other--or, conversely, sleep and doze off for the two hour flight to the border.

The man isn't Kimiko's taste. The attention, however, is. She enjoys it (as she always does).

----

Since they are sitting next to each other and they are probably not going to see many different english-speaking people over the course of this stint Kimiko tries her best to reach out and establish contact. Rather directly as is her way she extends a hand to Mikhail and David in turn and says:
"Kimiko SaintJames. How do you do? We've met at the orientation meeting in Darwin. Mikhail isn't it?" She gives the man a warm smile and a little wink.

"I haven't had the pleasure of making your aquaintance." she adresses David.

He had practically ran to the plane. Yangon had become more threatening by the minute over the past night, a carnival of deceit and madness he could never gauge. Even his memories of the last days were jumbled as though from a fever dream. Stand by your man. Hm. Glimpsed silhouettes of junta thugs, not trying very hard to be invisible, had quite warped the song's lyrical message. Sitting, he finds himself drifting into a sudden instant of microsleep.

A moment later he flinches back to wakefulness as movement invades his personal space. It is a woman's hand. Automatically his mouth manages a polite smile, but his eyes remain stolid, bleary, cold.

"David Raybourne." he replies, grasping her hand for half a second "Along on behalf of Her Majesty's government. Observe and report, and little else I'm afraid."

The woman is startlingly attractive; an objective assessment. And a worrying one.

"Might I ask your role here?"

OOC: Thank you...and since no one is going to post I'll just continue.

IC:

Kayah State, Burma/Myanmar

The plane flies over a dam which Major Kung speaks of like a smooth voiced tour guide: "This facility was built as part of reparations by the Japanese for their occupation of our country during WWII. It supplies most of the power for southern Myanmar..."

The town of Loikaw is the nearest town to the refugee camps that has a decent sized airport for this kind of plane. For now the UN and NGO air and land vehicles mostly fuel up and gather personnel from this facility until the airstrips are fully built.

It is a pretty town, and intelligence that David has indicates that the cease fire between the Karen rebels and Burmese Junta forces is fully in effect, but awaits aided negotiations. Loikaw will be one of the major areas for this. However until the mid nineties the Kayah and Karen rebel groups controlled almost half of the state.

As they land and disembark the waves of heat are not quite so bad as at Yangon but it is still a bit uncomfortably warm for those not from the tropics. Loikaw is a mountain town and very pretty, cleaner looking than Yangon but remote and very foreign to the Red Cross personnel and to David; people are in very ethnic dress in many cases. Glimpses of robed monks walking along peacefully, people in limpet like straw hats or colorful rag hats can be seen.

The party immediately with David, Kimiko and Mikhail (including Major Kung) find that a deuce and a half truck awaits them, driven by a rail thin slender Congolese volunteer called Laurent. Laurent is rather shy and smiles at them in a friendly way, gallantly offering to help Kimiko and Lucia up into the truck. Major Kung insists on riding shotgun as he knows the roads in the area well.

It is a slightly bumpy ride in the old army truck (which has a Red Cross painted on both sides and on the top).

When they arrive each has a slightly odd feeling that is nevertheless intensely personal.

Near the motor pool there is a rail station, and an old fashioned coal driven train is cooling down there, people disembarking with many of their worldly goods on their backs, holding the hands of small ragged children. Eyes glance at them with wary curiousity out of faces grimey from travel. Not far off a group of soldiers with ragged caps and somewhat non-uniform BDUs, khakis and the like with mostly armbands as their real uniforms stand easy with AK-47s or 74s in the crooks of their arms, one or two near a jeep that has a Soviet made general purpose machinegun mounted. They mostly seem like they're just kids.

David can see not far off a man in tropical barracks uniform with a blue beret, an Indian of some kind, chatting quietly with one of the Karen leaders. It all seems very civilized and polite and organized so far.

Kimiko feels the eyes of the children in particular on her, but also some of the men. It is as though she is some kind of rare bird; she feels watched and cannot read from the expressions if it is as curiousity, saviour, or victim.

Mikhail can see that for these villagers life is no longer normal; that no longer exists for them. They exist in the land of nowhere, and who knows what will happen to them?

Beyond lies the camp itself. It has so far been well organized into tents and quonset huts, with signs in several languages indicating the direction to laundry, fresh water, toilets, food preparation, offices, and the clinic. It is designated as a UNHCR facility in cooperation with UNICEF, the International Red Cross and Doctors Beyond Borders.

Laurent is prepared to lead them to accomdations and facilities whenever they are ready.

The Camp

Kimiko, led by Laurent to the clinic with the rest of the staff, sees that some of the volunteers have already unpacked some of her things, but not being medical personnel she has to organize her people to do some rearrangements. Already there are people lined up with medical complaints. Some of them have a clear idea of what they need, others are ignorant and just aware of pain. The first in line is a young woman in a tribal headscarf with silver bead jewellry around her neck. Her blank features do not hide the pain in her dark eyes as she wordlessly holds out a sick shivering toddler to Kimiko.

(Not necessary to reply to this particular encounter but perhaps give an idea of things Kimiko generally does today, information she might ask for, etc)

This ambient, this hot and humid ambient has been proved before by Mikhail... and the oppressive feeling of desolation isn't alien.

Mikhail, in rare times has generalized about people... but in this occasion, like in a few ones, he does.

Which could be the common feeling in their faces?... you know it, quite well... you do remember quite well too those faces...

The expression of pain, the dark smile translated as pain

''This essence... the same one, just the stage change''... Saying this with a distant look keeps walking with the team.

Mikhail is anxious of begin his work... he has some kind of Love-Hate relationship with his profession... and here he can feel a very interesting aura.

He is ready now to go to the facilities, but after... takes a look to the whole team and their new home... just walking in the surrounds.

Desolation... Hunger... Fear... that's all their little faces show... for the other side... Rage... Frustration... hopelessness... that's what the adults show... What is worse?, there's no worse here... all are victims.

This is a time bomb Mikhail... you know that... many frustration and desperation just waiting to collapse... But for whom start?...

Mikhail sees all the landscape... He is used to many things and this kind of situations is not alien to him at all. Although, each time, he confirms his Disgust and Love for the human being's apathy.

... Then of a short walk for the camp, he comes back to the point where the team is reunited. Seeks for Kimiko, and his others partners, it's time to ... ''work''... if this word may fit in the complex situation they are try to handle.
